These Paragon Heartwood Dunun Bells from Mali, also known as "kenken" (KEN-ken) are rectangular shaped and nest inside one another. This dundun bell set from Africa Heartwood Project is hand crafted by blacksmiths in Mali from recycled metal using traditional forging techniques, and is true professional grade. Because of the metal and technique used, each bell has a nice melodic sound quality, not as shrill and piercing as dunun bells made of metal piping. The kenken are traditionally played with the dunun drums laying transverse with the bell on top, with one hand playing the bell and the other playing the dunun with a wood mallet. Each set of dunun bells comes with 1 metal striker per bell, three strikers in all. Average sizes are 3.5"x6", 3"x5", and 2.5"x4" for L, M, and S. The bells may come with a reside on them from the way they are made, which can be wiped off. Rugged, authentic structure, texture, and sound; minor discoloration/rust is expected.
